ROSE & RODE0

A bijou country musical

Songs by Brendon Walmsley • Book by John Senczuk

“Sometimes to love someone … you have to walk away.”

On the great Darling Downs property Roschen, a young cowboy (Rodeo) falls in love with the cattle baron’s daughter, Rose Carberry. But she is engaged to the neighbouring property’s son, Justin Briars, and the marriage will join the two great district families (and their landholdings). Rodeo can’t compete, and has no option but to walk away. A decade later, and enduring a loveless and barren marriage, Rose re-connects with her first and only love when she meets Rodeo by chance at the Cooyar Show Rodeo. But Justin’s plans for Roschen force Rose to confront the ramifications of her marriage, her family and her responsibilities to the Carberry dynasty, and the land and homestead that stretch back six generations. Can she walk away from her marriage and her family? Can she walk away from Rodeo?

I saw the opening night of Brendon Walmsley’s Rose and Rodeo musical last night. It had everything, nostalgia, humour, romance and a beautiful selection of his songs. Well done Brendon and the crew.
